The office of Geology and Mineral Resources works to reduce risk from geologic hazards and encourage sustainable development through the wise use of mineral, land, water and energy resources. Virginia Energy's Coal Mine Safety and Mined Land Repurposing offices work to ensure safe and environmentally responsible coal mining operations in the state. Coal Mine Safety provides resources for worker safety, licensing, compliance and mine reclamation to keep operations safe, clean and productive. Mined Land Repurposing regulates surface mining effects, reclaims abandoned mine lands, issues permits and addresses citizen concerns related to land impacted by coal mining activities.

Virginia's first commercial natural gas well was drilled near Bristol in 1931. Nearly 100 years and over 10,000 wells later, the natural gas industry continues to be an integral part of the Commonwealth's economy. Virginia Energy regulates the effects of gas and oil operations through permitting, inspections, client assistance, abandoned well reclamation, correlative rights protections and conservation awareness.
