by J. E. Nolde, full-color map with text, one-sheet, scale 1:24,000, 1989. Map shows the geology and mineral resources of Keen Mountain 7.5 minute quadrangle. Keen Mountain quadrangle is located in the southwestern part of Virginia in Buchanan, Russell, and Tazewell counties. It lies entirely within the Appalachian Plateaus physiographic province. The bedrock in this quadrangle extends from the Mississippian-age Bluestone Formation to the Pennsylvanian Norton Formation. Generally, the strata in the Keen Mountain quadrangle have a homoclinal dip of approximately 1.5 degrees to the northwest, but there are two extensive structures mapped, the Dry Fork anticline and the Keen Mountain fault. Coal is the primary mineral/energy resource in the map area. Fourteen coal beds have been mapped in the quadrangle. Other mineral/energy resources include natural gas, shale and siltstone, and sandstone. Map includes cross-section.
