By W.L. Lassetter, 18 pages, 2 figures, 2 appendices, 2017. This report provides the results of laboratory analysis of Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials (NORM), as well as major and trace elements in shale gas source rocks from two main areas in Virginia including the Southwest Virginia Coalfield and the Taylorsville Mesozoic basin. The results can be directly applied to assessing radiation exposure from borehole cuttings brought to the surface during drilling, and determining best practices for drilling waste management. The study provides background radiation levels and trace element abundances in natural gas source rocks that can be used to assess interactions between the source rocks and formation waters, surface waters, in-situ natural gas, and the surface atmosphere. The full laboratory analytical results are included in the appendices. Online only.
