by M.R. Gwin and J.A. Henderson, Jr., 8.5 x 11-inch soft-cover book, 152 pages, 2 tables, 4 appendices include photo-reduced location maps, 1984. Compiled in 1984, this report provides information about coal occurrences located on federal lands within parts of 24 7.5-minute quadrangles in eleven counties in Virginia. Coals from the Appalachian Plateaus province (southwest Virginia Coalfield) are described for locations in Dickenson, Wise, Scott, and Lee counties. Coal occurrences in the Valley and Ridge province (Valley Coalfields) are from Botetourt, Roanoke, Montgomery, Pulaski, Wythe, Bland, and Smyth counties. The report gives a brief description of the geology and mining history for each of the coal fields, followed by descriptions of point locations including host formation name, lithology, coal bed name, coal thickness, surface elevation, etc. The point locations are shown on photo-reduced 7.5-minute quadrangle maps.
