by P.C. Sweet, 178 pages, 41 figures, 2 tables, 1982. This report contains the results of tests on the properties of clay, shale, and related materials required to evaluate their potential use for ceramic and non-ceramic products. A total of 130 samples, collected in 37 counties and three independent cities in Virginia were tested. These tests indicate that the material represented by 90 of the samples is potentially suitable for use as structural clay products (building brick, floor brick, structural tile), super-duty and medium-duty refractories, or lightweight aggregate.
