by P. Averitt, 50 pages, 3 plates, 4 figures, 5 tables, 1941. The Early Grove gas field, which lies in the Appalachian Valley in Scott and Washington counties in southwestern Virginia, includes the Early Grove anticline, as well as a belt of slightly folded Mississippian rocks, 3 miles wide and 23 miles long, bounded on the southeast by the Saltville thrust fault. Six wells have been drilled near the crest of the Early Grove anticline, five of which have successfully produced natural gas. Additional descriptions of the structural and stratigraphic features of this region, along with a discussion of locations that appear to be favorable for the accumulation of natural gas are presented in this report.
