by W. Lassetter, 2019, 33 x 48 inch poster. Mining operations in Virginia produced 68.9 million tons of non-fuel minerals in 2017 with an estimated market value exceeding $1.5 billion for the first time in the history of the Commonwealth. Annual mine production since the Great Recession (2007-09) has steadily increased at a modest rate, but remains significantly below the annual output levels leading up to the economic downturn. This is mainly the result of lower demand for construction aggregates, which in 2017 constituted 93% of all non-fuel minerals produced. The poster includes narrative describing recent trends in mine production, and comparisons with several economic indicators, including housing construction data, per capita consumption, and population growth statistics. Available online only.
