This report describes the stratigraphy and geologic structure of portions of the City of Martinsville, Patrick, Henry, Franklin, and Pittsylvania counties. The geology depicted on the accompanying geologic map is based on 1:24,000-scale geologic mapping of 31 quadrangles in the Piedmont. Rocks are grouped and discussed in the following areas: Blue Ridge anticlinorium, Smith River allochthon, Sauratown Mountains anticlinorium, Danville basin and Central Virginia volcanic-plutonic belt. Mines, quarries and prospects are plotted on the map for gold, barite, dimension stone, emery, iron, kaolin, light-weight aggregate, mica, marble, monazite, crushed stone, sand and gravel, and talc.
