<idAbs>

This digital map database represents the distribution of carbonate bedrock mapped in the Commonwealth of Virginia and is compiled at a nominal scale of 1:250,000. The database delineates areas that are mostly carbonate bedrock, areas of mixed carbonate and non-carbonate bedrock, and areas where carbonate layers are a minor component of the bedrock.

</idAbs>
<idPurp>This digital map feature class shows areas of carbonate bedrock identified on the statewide geologic map database of Virginia compiled by Witt and others (2021) [Witt, A.C., Heller, M.J., Occhi, M.E., Spears, D.B., Lang, K.E., Berquist, C.R. Jr., and Prince, P.S., editors, 2021, Statewide Geologic Map Database of Virginia: Virginia Department of Energy, Geology and Mineral Resources Program, Open-file Report 2021-12, 1:250,000-scale map]. It is intended to provide the generalized distribution of consolidated bedrock that contains or may contain carbonate material. The features are compiled from 1:24,000- to 1:250,000-scale geologic maps that are primary references for the distribution and characteristics of carbonate bedrock. These maps may be located using the National Geologic Map Database, https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/ngmdb/ngmdb_home.html and Virginia Energy's Find My Map tool located at https://vadmme.maps.arcgis.com/apps/InformationLookup/index.html?appid=5a26b4feea034a5dbc8353740222f0d8</idPurp>

<measDesc>The accuracy of the geologic data varies depending on the compiled map. In general, contact lines were digitized on screen at 1:24,000-scale. The accuracy of the line work (and generated map unit polygons) is reflected in the LocationConfidenceMeters field in the ContactsAndFaults feature class. Surficial units were interpreted primarily using 10-meter LIDAR or from geologic maps, if available. All line work (bedrock and surficial) was given a corresponding data source citation, identifying the original map source for the line work or the geologist who made the contact line interpretation.</measDesc>
